On the 17th of April I had my 33rd birthday, and got lots of congratulations. I was overwhelmed. I wanted to say thank you in a proper way, but words don't always come easy, so I decided to make a game instead.
Given the time I spent making this game, I would probably have managed to write a nice thank you message to my friends and family. But it was totally worth spending two whole weeks making a game instead.
I wanted my friends to know how much I appreciated their congratulations, so the idea was to put my friends in the game along with myself. The player plays the game as me, and through 3 different levels gets to meet my friends and him-/herself. Whenever the player meets a friend, the actual congratulation which was posted on my Facebook profile pops up and I reply with a wholeheartedly thank you.
The first sketches was full color, 16 bit pixel art style. I realized that would take me a lot of time to finish so I switched to a Game Boy style with 4 shades of grey, thinking it would be easier. It might be easier but still quite challenging to only work with 4 colors.
I had a blast making this game and I'm already looking forward to my next birthday :-)
